Selenastrum

Selenastrum Kuetzing: Scenedesmaceae.

Green algae. Floating, colony-forming, non-settling algae. Magnification shows robust star-shaped colonies made up of from 2 to 16, crescent- or banana-shaped cells linked back-to-back at their centers. A single chloroplast is at the side of each cell, almost filling it. The colony may have a mucilage coating. Frequent in lakes, ponds, and swamps; often found with Scenedesmus, a related group. These algae contribute to pond scums.
